Your reply shapes the story

One of the most common questions we've heard from early testers is: "Can I talk back?" They listen to Yuki's message, they feel something, and they want to respond. Until now, the reply options were limited to three preset buttons. Today, that changes.

Write your own reply

After listening to a message, you now have two options: pick from three suggested responses (great for beginners who want scaffolding), or type your own reply in Japanese. There's a 100-character limit — this isn't a chat app, it's a focused moment of production practice.

For many learners, this is the first time they'll write Japanese to someone who'll actually respond. That's a powerful moment. It's not a translation exercise or a fill-in-the-blank. It's genuine communication, even if it's just a few words.

Immediate character response

Here's the part we're most excited about: after you reply, your character responds immediately. Yuki might react to what you said, ask a follow-up question, or share something she was reminded of. The response is 2-3 sentences, in Japanese at your level, with a translation underneath.

This tiny moment of back-and-forth transforms the experience. The day's message stops being a one-way broadcast and becomes a conversation. It feels like texting a friend — which is exactly the point.

Every conversation is unique

Your reply and the character's response are stored and fed into tomorrow's message. If you told Yuki you love coffee, she might mention a new cafe she found. If you asked about her documentary, she might share an update. No two learners get the same story, because no two learners have the same conversation.

This is what we mean by "the relationship is the curriculum." The story adapts to you — not just your proficiency level, but your interests, your choices, and the relationship you're building.

Try it out. Listen to today's message, and write something back. Even 「すごい!」 counts. Yuki's waiting.
