Language learning apps have a retention problem. Most learners drop off within the first month—not because the pedagogy is wrong, but because there's nothing to come back for. Flashcard apps teach vocabulary without meaning. Conversation bots chat without direction. Textbooks exist without warmth.

We believe the missing ingredient is emotional investment. You don't need a better algorithm—you need a reason to care. A story you want to follow. A person whose life you're curious about.

That's Tomo. Daily messages from friends in Japan whose stories unfold over weeks and months. You learn Japanese not because an app tells you to, but because you want to understand what Yuki is saying about her documentary, or what Kenji thinks about the changing seasons in his garden.

Tomo combines narrative storytelling with proven language acquisition science: comprehensible input theory, spaced repetition, and proficiency-calibrated content. Every message is generated by AI that understands your level, your vocabulary, and your relationship with each character.

We're starting with Japanese—going deep on one language before expanding to others. Every character, narrative arc, and cultural detail is crafted with care. More languages are coming, built with the same attention.
